OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! Come visit George and Martha Washington at General Washington's Field Tent!
The tent erected on the Oldest House Museum Complex grounds is a full-scale replica of the original George Washington War Tent, owned by the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The tent is currently on loan to the Withlacoochee Chapter of the Florida Society, Sons of the American Revolution. As funds become available, the Withlacoochee Chapter will be using the tent to house a mobile museum dedicated to telling the story of the tent and the American Revolution as our country celebrates the decade of our 250th anniversary.
Sons of the American Revolution Compatriot Nathan Taylor collaborated with the Museum of the American Revolution, applying his experience in creating various solutions for the Disney Organization to recreate this modern replica of one of the most important artifacts from the American Revolution.
Several command tents and marquees used by George Washington during the American Revolutionary War have survived and are preserved in museum collections. These portable headquarters symbolize Washington’s leadership, discipline, and constant presence with his troops. The survival of his war tents is remarkable, considering that most military tents from that era did not endure due to their fabric composition.
