"The Men on the Monument: St. Augustine's Soldiers in Confederate Service" is the St. Augustine Historical Society's companion to the previously published "Valiant Soldiers: St. Augustine's Men of Color in the Age of Civil War." St. Augustine men fought on both sides. The new book follows St. Augustine's men in gray through the conflict to Kentucky, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and finally Texas. After the war they returned to play roles in civilian society, and memory of their service gave rise to the legend of the "Lost Cause," which raised monuments to the heroes of the Confederacy across the South.
