Steven Noll is an Instructional Professor in the Department of History at the University of Florida and an Affiliate Faculty member of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service. Trained as both a historian and a special educator, he earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Florida, where his scholarship has long focused on disability history, environmental history, and the social and political history of Florida and the American South. Over the course of his career, he has taught a wide range of courses that bridge history, literature, disability studies, race, and environmental change, while also bringing historical scholarship into conversation with contemporary public issues.
Professor Noll is the award-winning author and editor of numerous books and articles, including Ditch of Dreams: The Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida’s Future, which received major regional and scholarly honors, and Writing for the Public Good, a recent collection reflecting his commitment to civic engagement and public history. He is a frequent invited speaker and keynote lecturer, presenting to audiences ranging from academic conferences to museums, libraries, community groups, and professional organizations across Florida and beyond. Widely recognized for his teaching, scholarship, and public service, Professor Noll’s work exemplifies how historical inquiry can illuminate questions of environment, disability, democracy, and social justice in both the past and the present
